CMR can be expensive with drugs. They seem to get commission on the pharmacy making huge profits. Ask for a prescription to get your medication at a local pharmacy. They try to have drugs that local pharmacy sometimes don’t stock. JCI won’t monitor this practice. The government promised to take steps to restrict the practice, not sure if it was implemented. They were supposed to submit what they pay for drugs and what they charge. But after all they specialize in Medical Tourism which has been in operation for decades!
I have had some good treatment there and some bad experiences too. Wrong diagnosis for instance, I was treated for food poisoning when I actually had dengue fever! However, eventually their treatment for dengue as an In patient was excellent.
I also had in patient special X-ray treatment there for a few days which cost over 100K THB, as an emergency. Acceptable. But a few years later I had the same treatment as an Outpatient at Nakornping Hospital for less than half the price! There however you need a Thai Interpreter and I had a nurse friend there who assisted with reduction in the waiting time! They have a private sector as well, and their Consultants/ Specialists work elsewhere. The Urologist for instance worked at Rajavej Hospital. The latter has English speaking staff, a bit more thorough I feel than CMR and about the same price. They have a good emergency service too. They are located near the Gymkhana Club and we have used their services for years during the Cricket season, particularly the International tournament at Gymkhana which has been held for more than 30 years now.
We also use the Physiotherapist and First Aid nurses from McCormick Hospital for several years now on an annual basis at the 7 days tournament. The Physio is qualified in Sports medicine as well.
Also for vaccinations the Government hospitals are very good, updated vaccines at good rates and fast service. Tessaban Hospital near Wororot market; Nakornping Hospital, MaevRim and Darapirom Police Hospital in Mae Rim ( newly opened).
Good experience with Bangkok hospital, the Specialist would discuss prices and options. You get the option to buy drugs at outside pharmacies!
Btw it's Ram as in balm not Ram as the sheep. Ram is one of the most important Hindu deities in Indian culture. You will notice that the king of Thailand is also named Rama (the current one being Rama X). Also i think the j is not silent in Maharaj in Thai but i might be mistaken. Maharaj means great king.
i just visited Doi Saket Hospital, a govt. hospital yesterday. The doctor was literally in the emergency room and overseeing some emergency care patients on IV's. Bizarre experience to be diagnosed in a large hall in front of many people. But the price was a fraction of Chiang Mai Ram hospital. Still i might end up going there in the end for specialist treatment if the general line of antibiotics they prescribed doesn't work. It cost me about 515 baht. I've been to chiang mai ram and it cost me almost 5000 baht for some ENT stuff.
I had inflammation of the rotator cuff. At the same hospital – RAM. A few minutes to see the doctor. A few more for an X-ray. Two or three more minutes for a shot.by the doctor. 3,000+ baht.
McCormick now has a dedicated wing for your yearly checkup. Very nice. No more wandering around their sprawling campus.
Sriphat bar none. These outpatient fees are equivalent to US hospital’s co pay.
Doesn't it say not to film in the hospital. People deserve their privacy…..
I worked in public schools in Thailand. I kept my government insurance when I quit teaching. Awesome great program. I now go to Lanna Hospital. I live about 1 hour south. Doctors are first class. I see a variety of specialists. Usually all tests are same day. I trust this hospital.
McCormicks is my go to hospital
Rajavej hospital is excellent, mixed public and private definitely more Thai oriented but has a lot of the same doctors from Ram,Bangkok and Chiang Mai University teaching hospital working there. The have excellent onsite translators to help with any questions.Their prices are less than half of Ram but with the same high standards and service.Ive had two operations there and both times had very spacious and well equipped private rooms with mini kitchen, balcony and lounge area and a very extensive menu to order from.Definitely a hospital that I have no hesitation in recommending in regards to quality and pricing.
Mc Cormic is also good😊
I always thought that Bangkok Hospital is the most expensive one in Chiang Mai but I "only" pay 650 Baht for a specialist (cardiologist) there. No additional hospital or nurse fee.
Excellent tips Randy much thanks!
The first and therefore the oldest hospital in Chiang Mai is the Mc Cormick hospital, cheap and great hospital. I switched from the Ram to the Mc Cormick years ago and I’m super happy. I must say I’m 80 year young very healthy and I just go to hospital for a check up every 2-3 years for the rest my food is my medecin.
Glad that you are back Randy have always found your videos to be very upbeat and helpful. I have heard very good things about Rajavej Hospital, have you or anybody else had experience with them ?
In Europe the health system is not free. You pay with taxes and the difference is several times more than any good insurance in tha USA.
I can vouch for Dr. Anat at McCormick Hospital. He saved my life! Expert surgery.
Had my ankle fused 2x at CM Ram. First one failed maybe because I walked on it too soon. Cash payment was right on the estimate. Follow-up X-rays (several) were cheaper at Ram compared to hospitals outside of CM. (400-700 B compared to 1000-1400 Baht. Ram is not luxury hotel style but it does the job speaking as a retired Canadian former hospital professional. I was in and out in 1-2 days. Can't comment on the food. I used the 7-11 just outside the hospital. My surgeon suggested the Uni hospital to save some money but my Thai partner was against it for the parking and ward type rooms. After 6 months recovery I am walking on it again.
Very helpful video. If you ever do a follow-up, can I suggest you include McCormick Hospital? I'm an American expat and have received excellent care there at very reasonable prices.
Mate you miss a lot, almost you have no clue. Bangkok and Ram are no 1 and 2 most expensive in Chiang Mai. By far. Rajavej and McCormack are also private hospitals which offer excellent English speaking service. Ram is double the price of Ravajet from my experience. Also, Lanna is actually owned by Ram.
I heard a nurse ask a farang if he had any allergies. The answer came back ‘only Cashiers’!
I went to Ram yesterday and saw a doctor within an hour. The ophthalmology department was fantastic and gave me a lot of confidence. The price was extremely low. Two other hospitals had failed to deal with my problem.
