24 Hours Eating Where the Locals Eat in Chiang Mai

In this episode we spend 24 hours eating where the locals eat in Chiang Mai, tracking down some of the best Northern Thai food in the city, from smoky handmade sausage to one of the most talked about bowls of khao soi in the mountains.

We start just outside the airport at a small handmade Sai Ua (Northern Thai sausage) stall I’ve nicknamed “Aunties”, where the sausage is grilled fresh over charcoal and served with sticky rice, herbs and fiery chilli dips. Simple, local and seriously delicious.

Next we head into the city to the famous Tong Tem To, one of Chiang Mai’s most popular Northern Thai restaurants. Here we dive into classics like rich gaeng hang lay pork curry and smoky laab kua, two dishes that perfectly show off the deep, herbal flavours of Northern Thai cuisine.

After that we jump on the bikes and head up into the mountains past Doi Suthep to the Hmong village of Doi Pui. We’re here to try what @TheJoeyP once called the best khao soi in the world. I wouldn’t quite go that far… but it’s definitely elite.

Finally, we finish the day at Neng’s Clay Oven Roasted Pork at Muang Mai Market, where trays of crispy pork belly and roasted meats make for the ultimate meaty finale.

If you’re visiting Chiang Mai and want to eat like a local, these are some incredible places to start.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this YouTube channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!

If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

  1. Las time at Khao Soi Doi Pui I got to chat with auntie, and you guys have a point – this is not like any other Khao Soi!
Her husband is indian, and she uses his masala to cook the curry. Nothing like a Chinese Muslim or Chiang Mai Khao Soi – and absolutely delicious

  2. Another great place to find CM sausage is at Tanin market in santitham.. the lady there has been there for 25 years.. CM is my home so maybe I'm biased.. love the place

  3. Just doom scrolling (living in Chiang Mai for over 6 years now) and decided to watch your video from last year about what we eat for breakfast … your choices were spot on from this expats opinion, but what I really stopped by to say is, you are probably the first youtuber who pronounced the name properly (well, as 'properly' as a non-native Thai speaker are capable of pronouncing it 😉

I don't know if you've ever been to one of those 'Thai Buffet' places, but those are awesome … you need to go with someone who knows what they are doing (my Wife is Thai, and has lived in Chiang Mai for nearly 30 years) as this is a cook your own food experience (grill and boiler hotpot combo in the middle of the table, you go grab your ingredients and sauces and go wild.

Thai sauces are one of the great experiences of life IMO!

Oh, yeah, and those sausages ,,, yes, they are the best.

  4. My man MC Grinda AKA Sniper. Nice to meet you in Don Meuang the day after this Gary. Hope your son enjoyed his Khao (not from Chiang Mai). No response to my text!!

  5. Guy cooking and handling food in the street with his barehands and nothing there to to wash them with. I hope you didn't stay rest of your vacation days in bed. JK.😂😂😂

  6. Hi Gary ,
Do you know this one , I think it is the streamed beef ( maybe water buffalo with herbs encrusted ) wrapped maybe in the banana leaf. This was from a town north of chiang mai and before fang. Khob khun kap. Chok dee mate

  7. Hi Gary, I have been following your food gems for a while now, and what am amazing foods me and my family enjoyed everything. But you as a Khao Soi Specialist I would like to recommend one place with amazing Khao Soi: Ding’s Noodle in Koh Chang. Maybe you allready know it but its a are serieus contender and super local 😁

  8. Still rocking on the buzz from the OTR/Mark Wiens crossover now another great team up! Lovely. I've only been to the Moo Krob (when it was at it's Org local. Yeah; "best sausage in the world" I guess, there's SO much good Sai Uua out there, that's a tough call definitly looks like it would be top 10 though. I like the Beef Sai Uua from an Halal shop I know myself but, the vibe at your place looks great! Love that roast chili Nam Prick (hot sauce.) I think Joel Bruner started the Hajj to that place up on Doi Pui, then he brought his folks, then M.W. and I guess your mate followed suit. Lucky there's not a line down the street like the places in town that the "foodie vloggers" have called "top 10," nice that it's a bit of a haul. one should visit Doi Pui anyhow. Speaking of Hajj, your mate there is right on with his comparison of that type of Khao Soi to Persian food (Love it!) Halal Khao Soi is different, with cloves, maybe cinnamon as you mentioned. If you walk along the 1st Soi of the night market area, where the Mosque is, you'll find a few places that serve similar. Still dreaming that You and OTR will do another cross over, this time about, yes, Khao Soi!!

  11. Love that video mate! Still cranking out the quality content my man 🙂 I have had that Khao Soi place on my map for years, since Joey went up there. Im so pleased you were able to try it finally and gives us your opinion. You could tell you were blissing out over that one!! Considering all those years ago you travelled specifically for Khao Soi that was a golden moment indeed! Well done chaps, loved that vid!

  12. Great video.
Spot three. I would love that.
    Entitled tourist. LOL.
    Shame about the clove.
    Lemon bottle. Haha.
Good vibes with you two. Look forward to more videos.
