Safety, interest-based groups & communities, housing options in the city and the countryside, just some of the many things people consider before moving to a new location long term.

So today, I’ll cover these points by sharing from experience after living in Chiang Mai Thailand since 2018. I’ll also throw in some practical tips that should come in handy once you’re here.

Chiang Mai City Facts

Chiang Mai city is the largest city in Northern Thailand and the fifth largest in the country in terms of population. But unlike many big cities, there are no tall skyscrapers here or massive buildings. Instead, it’s more like a large, traditional village that’s almost sprawling.

Safety:
Generally, I feel safe here in Chiang mai. The locals are friendly but as with any place you go, be sure to keep your wits and street smarts with you to avoid any issues during your stay. Keep an eye on your valuables, don’t leave your keys in your scooter or motorcycles, you get the point.

Interest-Based Groups and Communities

In Chiang Mai, there are many groups and communities for just about anything – meditation, yoga, hiking, cycling, moms, food lovers, night lifers, and so on. I would recommend joining some FB groups relevant to your interests to learn more about events and activities you may like.

Living in Chiang Mai

If you like to be in the countryside with a more rural feel, there’s Doi saket, Mae Rim, saraphi, and San kamphaeng. Traffic is lighter, you’ll see more ricefields, it is quieter, and there are quaint cafes and restaurants with scenic views

although after the rice harvest season it can get pretty smoky in these areas when farmers burn the fields to prepare it for the next planting season.

By the way, are there a lot of snakes there? I heard that in Thailand, snakes (cobras) can sometimes show up in gardens.
