First 24 Hours in Chiang Mai – A City Full of Surprises! Thailand ๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ญ

I just arrived in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the first 24 hours here completely blew me away. After landing at Chiang Mai Airport and checking into our hotel, we headed straight out to explore one of Thailandโ€™s most cultural cities.

Our first stop was the beautiful Silver Temple (Wat Sri Suphan), one of the most unique temples in Chiang Mai with its incredible handcrafted silver details. From there, we rented a motorbike and went searching for some of the cityโ€™s most famous local food.

Of course, we had to try the legendary Khao Soi, Chiang Maiโ€™s famous Northern Thai curry noodle soup โ€“ and it absolutely lived up to the hype.

After exploring the Old Bazaar and local markets in Chiang Mai, we decided to escape the city and ride into the mountains to discover a hidden jungle temple called Wat Pha Lat. This incredible temple sits deep in the forest and honestly felt like stepping into an Indiana Jones movie, surrounded by jungle, ancient stone structures, and peaceful mountain scenery.

To finish the day, we rode back into the city and explored the lively Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, one of the best night markets in Thailand where youโ€™ll find street food, souvenirs, and local vendors every single evening.

If youโ€™re planning a trip to Northern Thailand, this video shows some of the best things to do in Chiang Mai in just one day.

  1. I feel as though you were a little bit reckless riding that scooter through that housing village. One wrong move and you and the scooter could have ended up in the filthy water. I have a feeling Mado would have never agreed to do that ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
Please stay safe, we'd hate to see you injured.

  2. You made the most of every minute in your solo wanderings Glen! So fascinating. The scooter rides look crazy – I feel like it's a miracle you came out unscathed

  3. Its not funny that the boy doesnt like you Glen – its a sad testimony to what he knows about never talk to strangers especially white men.
I reckon you need to get yourself back to an english speaking country very soon – park up and get married and have some beautiful blue eyed babies : )

  4. Glen, you are too friendly, be polite but don't go overboard. Stop saying hello, then they think you will buy from them !! What are those red vans/cars for Glen? A great vlog, they always are though !! x

  6. The park looked very peaceful. I love being near flowing water. The sound is so calming. Thank you for showing us around. You always put in a big effort. ๐Ÿ‘โค๏ธ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Hi glen,
    Great video as always
I have to say all the Irish people I know canโ€™t eat much rice but they can eat potatoes non stop,
When was the last time you had some BBC?
    Take care.

  8. Mindblowing how much the Chang Mai township has grown. Back in 1994 it was just opening up to tourism. It was still considered risky as part of the "golden triangle," an opium poppy and heroine processing world hotspot, operating across the border areas of Thailand, Burma and Laos. I went with a tour group, to ensure of my safety. There were very few foreigners around. There were wild elephants that wandered into the hotel ground of where I was staying. Such visits by wild elephants were still happening regularly back then. I had glorious views across the Mekong and we watched monks and others coming across the river from Burma, which was then closed to foreigners completely. Lots of cross border smuggling was going on and the town had a very edgy vibe. I remember the Chinese market very well and the yummy street food. Sticky rice is traditionally eaten with your fingers, and you roll it into little balls, so no wonder you were finding it hard. I remember ringing one of those big gong things at one of the amazing temples. I also remember meeting with an old monk. Thai men are expected to go in and out of the monasteries as monks quite a few times in their life, unless they decide to become a life long monk. A Thai friend went in after his father died for a number of months, is an example of that. So too those boys from the soccer team that were trapped in the cave. They all did a stint as monks as a thankyou gesture. I also remember going out to meet with members of the Karin community living in the hills. Those hills are in fact foothills of the Himalayas, according to my Thai friend. I love the way you seek out locals and authentic, rather than tourist offerings. Experiencing local food and culture is what defines the key difference between a traveller and a tourist. I am so grateful you take seasoned travellers like me, along for the journey. Excited to hear of your experiences of your three days staying with the monks and equally excited to hear of Mado's experience with the yoga teacher training course. Thanks so much!
