Chaos In Thailand Today! Giant Floods, Typhoon Kajiki Destroy Homes In Chiang Mai

Several roads in Chiang Mai city were submerged on Tuesday as storm Kajiki dumped heavy rain on northern Thailand, but continued to weaken. The Chiang Mai Municipal Office reported flooded roads around Suthep market, locally known as Talad Ton Payom. Workers were draining floodwater and officials were directing traffic navigating inundated roads. Typhoon Kajiki and the flooding it triggered has killed eight people, including one in Thailand and seven in Vietnam, authorities said on Wednesday, with the Vietnamese government warning of more flash floods and mudslides to come. It has also knocked down electricity poles, resulting in blackouts that directly affect 1.6 million people, mostly in Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces, the statement added. While rural districts faced landslides, Chiang Mai city itself was inundated by flash floods. On August 26, hours of steady rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, submerging roads and neighborhoods. Streets that rarely flood—such as Ratchapakhinai, Ratchadamnoen, and Sirimangkalajarn—were under 30 to 50 centimeters of water.
