As a Canadian 1.5 to 2 years close to retirement I’ve been researching a 3 or 4 location annual plan to explore Thailand I.e. Chang Mai, then move during burning season, Hua Hin and then southern Thailand. Minimize rainy season and also enjoy costal life. Yes it means adjusting your budget for tracel expenses, no Chang Mai villa with a pool or high end condo and choose cheaper accommodation anywhere. My goal is explore everything that Thailand has to offer and then decide when you’re older when travel may become difficult or,your personal preferences have changed. You can explore, test the waters and see what ends up being the most important I.e public transport, the vibe or the weather.

Chaing Mai burning season starts in January often, sometimes it's only one or two days where it is bad, by the end of January early February. It can turn really bad, by the end of February early March. It's an absolute nightmare for your health, it can last for two months or more, sometimes three months, that's a deal-breaker for anybody that cares about their health, Chiang Mai is literally half the price of Bangkok, and you know what? You get exactly what you pay for, a lot of people live in Chiang Mai because they can't afford Bangkok, I get that, I understand it, but there are many other places to live in In Thailand for almost the same price as Chiang, Mai, and still be in a vibrant city/town, Hua Hin is a good example and you get the ocean as well. Don't get me wrong. I love Chiang Mai, and I wish the burning season would disappear and be a non-issue, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.(if ever)
